Emma Paton's Merry Guide to Suffolk: Where to Eat, Shop and Explore

I am so excited to share some of my favourite spots in Suffolk with you!

I moved here over 7 years ago now and have loved exploring this historical county with its ‘Suffolk pink’ houses and quirky village charm. It has a famous and beautiful coastline too with seaside towns and coastal vibes perfect for exploring in my Merry People boots!

It also has a great foodie scene and I have shared some of the best places to seek out.

Stop 1 – Lavenham

Probably one of the prettiest and most iconic places in Suffolk, Lavenham is famous for its beautifully preserved medieval Tudor architecture and crooked(spot the famous ‘Crooked House’) timber-framed houses.

It’s super colourful and a great place to spend an afternoon. Simply walking around the whitewashed timbers of the guildhall and high street takes you back in time and it feels like you’re on a film set!

Watch out for De Vere House which was featured in one of the Harry Potter films. Stop at The Parlour for an award winning hot chocolate with giant marshmallows – they are the best!

Or try out Lavenham Blue Vintage Tea Room for a traditional home made afternoon tea, set in a Grade II listed 15th Century timber framed cottage! You can ring the bell at your table for a tea top up!

Stop 2 – Woodbridge

My favorite place to head when I need a good coffee (head to Two Magpies or Honey & Harvey) and a look around some great independent shops. Vanil – a Scandi inspired homewares shop is my must visit! As well as Pocket, Norfolk Natural Living and The Merchants Table.

I also always pop into the local array of charity shops and Vintage 49, they have a lovely curation of vintage finds. Head up to Market Hill for views of Woodbridge’s iconic town square and the shire hall. There you will also find sustainable, local bakery, Acre. They have excellent long-fermented sourdough and croissants.

There is a market here on a Thursday too, a great time to pick up fresh flowers. This historic town has some lovely riverside walks and good places to eat too. For a light lunch New Street Market does excellent salads (make sure you look in at The Studio next door too), with kids we go for pizza at The Woodyard which overlooks the iconic Tidemill and the river Deben.

For a special meal the The Unruly Pig on the outskirts of town is an award winning gastro pub with amazing food!

Stop 3 – Walberswick

I always stop at Pinch on the way to the coast. Their crullers are simply the best thing you will ever eat! Dog friendly too, a must do for anyone visiting Suffolk and after a sweet pick me up.

Walberswick is a pretty seaside gem of a village, next to the more famous Southwold. It’s known for crabbing and has black beach huts on a glorious, breathtaking beach.

I tend to take a walk along the coastal path, find a spot to sit and take in the sea views in the grassy sand dunes before heading into the village via the green for some hearty pub grub at one of the pubs. My go to is The Anchor pub with plenty of outdoor seating and local and seasonal produce on the menu.

Lastly, look out for Charlie Mackesy artwork and sketches around the village! He is a famous resident!

My top tip when exploring Suffolk – always dress for the British weather! Lots of layers and don’t forget your Merry People boots. Perfect for comfort whilst getting your steps in exploring in the rain and sunshine.
