Stories of Merry People: Sweet Treats with Dee's Basement
Since Merry People's beginnings, we have had the joy of meeting people who lead lives of adventure, kindness and merriness. From our customers, to creatives, to founders, we have been - and are - so lucky to spend time with such inspiring people!
This series is all about sharing the stories of people who are seeking out and creating joy in their lives and work.
For this "Stories of Merry People", we spoke with Dee Omole, the founder and creative soul behind Dee's Basement (@deesbasement), a confectionery studio in East London specialising in distinctive, nostalgic-style cakes and desserts, conveniently available for delivery throughout the UK.
Find out how she winds down, what brings her joy, and what's next for her baking business in our interview with Dee below!

It’s so great to have you on our Stories of Merry People series!
C
an you tell us a little bit about your business and what you do?

My name is Dee, and I'm the founder of confectionery studio Dee's Basement, where we create cakes, desserts, and other sweet treats for private and corporate clients. From weddings and birthdays to brand events, we're known for our modern twists on a classic French Madeleine, as well as Bento Cakes.

I have loved baking since a young age, cultivating a significant sweet tooth during my childhood. I used to practice baking with my mother, and as I grew older, I honed that passion by crafting sugary creations for the birthdays of friends and family members.

 Dee on her day off!
A drizzly day spent exploring a gorgeous estate in our Fergie Wellington Boots.

Merriness! For us, it’s dancing in the rain and splashing carefree in puddles. What does it mean to you?

Some sort of self care whether that be a massage or just taking extra time for my skincare!

Slowing down and switching off. What peaceful routines bring you joy?

I love movies (my favourite one is Shrek 2!) so love a solo trip to the cinema where I can switched off my phone and any other distractions.

What’s your style motto?

Something comfortable and practical like smart joggers with a great jumper and trainers or a great pair of boots like my Fergie Wellington Boots.

We have loved to see how your business has grown at pace since you started in 2017! What's coming up for you this year?

I'm working on a very exciting project that I can't share just yet but will take up a lot of my year, plus looking to do some fun pop ups around London so keep an eye out!

And finally, on the days you're not in the kitchen baking up a delicious storm, where do you love to explore in your area?

I love exploring restaurants and bakeries in my local area in places such as Camden Passage, and going on aimless walks to see what other shops I stumble upon!
